Getting to Batu Caves
What a start to the morning! We almost took the wrong train because signage was not clear at our local train station, Klang.
We got dropped off by my aunt and bought our tickets which are actually round chips which are reusable! Very interesting. Works like a touch and go system. I love how these chips are environmentally friendly especially for tourists who only purchase one way tickets. You scan the chip when you get into the station and then drop it back into the barrier gate at the end of your trip. That way the chips get recycled and there’s no paper waste unlike Sydney’s one day paper opal tickets.
The trains also have “women only carriages” if you are a woman and want to stay there feel free to!
It should be noted that the journey onwards to Batu Caves requires a change over at KL Sentral and is about an hour from Klang so you can plan your trip accordingly.
Tip: make sure to check train times before leaving! We got to KL Sentral only to find out that the train wasn’t coming for an hour. We asked the train guard if we could go out because we got a one way ticket, and luckily we could. So we went around KL Sentral shopping and went to get something to eat.
Then it was another 36min train ride to Batu Caves.
Be warned that this place is a tourist site and it is swarming with people especially when you are climbing the stairs.
The stairs
There are about 230 steps up to the top of the cave. The stairs are a bit steep so you will find a burn in your legs when climbing up. Coming down was a lot easier on the legs but still hold onto the railing if you need the support haha
There’s ask a voluntary option to carry up some working materials to help the cave maintenance people. Feel free to if you are strong. Unfortunately I had to opt out.
You’ll also encounter some wild monkeys! Super cheeky.
Inside the Caves
Once inside there’s little to do except marvel at the natural wonder. Take your time to explore.
There’s also a “Dark Cave” you can take a tour in which includes a lot of creepy crawlers if you’re into that.
Overall
I wouldn’t spend more than an hour here. Climb the steps, take a few photos and maybe buy something fresh to eat.
This is a tourist site and souvenirs will also be really expensive. So be wary of that.
